About Kamakhya

Kamakhya India began its journey as a social enterprise in 2019, with a vision to create an eco-friendly environment for safe and hygienic menstruation. We commenced with bringing on board a team of professionals doctors, entrepreneurs, and other menstrual enthusiasts. It is indeed common to see that women support each other of their kind. However, when it comes to their self-hygiene and personal well-being they tend to take a step back. Kamakhya India embarked with a thought to make menstruators and non-menstruators to put hygiene first.

Kamakhya was launched on 12th January, 2020 giving rise to not one but two social products aimed at supporting women.

  1. Creating a safe space of knowledge and one-stop destination for females.
  2. Creating awareness for women’s health, hygiene and environment.

Since our inception, Kamakhya India has grown into a sustainable Indian social institution, committed to work on ground level. Over the past six years, we've worked tirelessly to ensure that our efforts are inclusive, involving both communities and businesses in the collective process of change.

As we’ve progressed, we’ve faced difficult choices and embraced innovation. Whether it was working directly in communities through a service-delivery approach, applying management principles to development work, or adopting a business model in the social sector, we’ve consistently strived to bring every member of society into the fold. Yes, we have often taken the road less travelled and as the saying goes, that has made all the difference.

“Shaping a better world through sustainable periods.”

Why do we do?

At Kamakhya, our work is centered on 3 key areas

A. Awareness on menstruation and breaking the taboo around period

• As of 2019, only about 36% women in India use sanitary pads during periods. Millions of girls drop out of education because of lack of menstrual hygiene management facilities, including availability of sanitary napkins and awareness about menstruation.

B. Period poverty

• Alarming number of women living in rural areas of the country use unhealthy rags during periods. These unhealthy alternatives can increase a woman’s chances of contracting cervical cancer, Reproductive Tract Infections, Hepatitis B infection, various types of yeast infections and Urinary Tract Infection, to name a few.(sources)

C. Sustainable menstrual products

• After being disposed of, sanitary products that are usually made out of plastic take over 500 years to break down. WaterAid India, a non-profit organization, stresses on the need to find sustainable alternatives to menstrual hygiene practices in India, as it has estimated that of this 121 million girls and women dispose of about 21,780 million pads annually, which poses a major threat to the country’s waste management crisis.
